EXPLORATHON ‘15 is Scotland’s European Researchers’ Night and will take place on 25 September 2015. Although it’s called a ‘Night’, activities are taking place throughout the afternoon and evening at a variety of venues across Edinburgh! Join researchers across Europe and celebrate your research!
EXPLORATHON ‘15 is coordinated by the Universities of Aberdeen, Glasgow, Strathclyde and the Beltane Public Engagement Network in Edinburgh, funded by the European Commission. Researchers’ Night gives people a chance to find out what researchers really do. While there is special emphasis on sharing research funded by the European Commission, this event is open to ALL researchers in Edinburgh. All subject areas and career stages are welcome – your research does not need to be funded by the European Commission. This high-profile initiative is a great opportunity to hone your public engagement skills in a supported setting.
This afternoon and evening programme of events gives Edinburgh researchers the opportunity to share your work with members of the public. So get involved….. you could deliver drop in sessions, demos and hands on activities; interactive presentations and discussions; visual and performing arts; comedy events at The Stand, a science ceilidh and something completely new!
As 2015 is the Scottish Year of Food and Drink; Dig It! 2015 – Scottish Year of Archaeology; UN International Year of Light and FAO Year of Soils and Scottish folklore – can you use any of these themes to present your own research in topical and engaging ways?
We are looking for drop in sessions and hands on activities; interactive presentations and discussions; visual and performing arts; comedy events and more! We will have “EU Corners – Meet the Experts” at some of the venues. The feedback from Explorathon ’14 was that the public would love to attend more biology-themed events so we look forward to getting your suggestions. This year, we’re also keen to include events related to the following themes:
- UNESCO International Year of Light
- Scottish Year of Food and Drink
- FAO Year of Soils
- Dig It! 2015 – Archaeology
- Scottish folklore
A £1,000 Award is available to create an activity to celebrate International Year of Light. Please submit your proposal by 17 July to be considered for this award.
How can I get involved?
1. As an event provider – organising an event
2. As an event contributor – contributing an activity to a larger event
3. As a volunteer to support the successful and smooth delivery of events
