NCCPE Engage Conference @ Edinburgh
Nov 29 @ 9:00 am – Nov 30 @ 5:00 pm

Framing new futures for public engagement

At the Engage Conference this year we’ll be exploring new futures for university public engagement; celebrating the NCCPE’s 10 year anniversary; and taking stock of the lessons learned. Weaving in stories from people who have been working to embed public engagement in their practice and institutions – and with provocation from outside the sector – Engage 2018 will help set the foundations for the road ahead.

The conference will be framed around three themes:

Facing the future

  • The landscape for public engagement continues to morph and change, sensitive to broader changes in wider society. How can we make sense of the dramatic changes we are living through? How do we need to adapt our engagement activity? What opportunities are we missing? Who else can help? What will it look like 10 years from now? How will we get there?

Stories of change

  • Engagement takes time, but can be transformative. Stories can help reflect where we have come from and where we are going, enabling us to gain insights and change direction. Do you have stories to share – about your own journey or about how teams, projects, organisations and publics have been changed by engagement?

Perspectives on practice

  • Engagement is typically a human, subtle process that creates significant change – to people, practices and products. There are a multitude of methods and approaches. Can you help us understand how to make engagement work?

This year we are going to Edinburgh, one of the original Beacons for Public Engagement, and now home of the Beltane Public Engagement Network. We are working with the Beltane Public Engagement Network which comprises Edinburgh Napier UniversityHeriot Watt University, the University of Edinburgh and Queen Margaret University to curate, organise and deliver an Engage Conference with a difference. Expect all the things you love about Engage – including plenty of opportunities to network and connect with others, inspiring keynote speakers, critical analysis, and stories of excellent engagement. A new place gives us the opportunity to include some new features, including a community focused ‘poster party’, and wrap-around events with a Scottish flavour.

Beltane Brunch | Digital Storytelling – Learning from the Big Picnic Project @ Lister Learning and Teaching Centre (4.3)
Dec 12 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am

Beltane Breakfasts, Twilights, Brunches and Lunches are informal meetings where people from Edinburgh’s universities, and people who want to work with them, can come to find out more and share information about specific public engagement topics. At this Beltane Brunch, we’ll be hearing what colleagues at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh have learned about digital storytelling through the Big Picnic project.

Colleagues at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh ran a digital storytelling activities aimed at giving a voice to underserved communities about access to nutritious food. Individuals from the communites recorded a short audio track which was then supported by still images. The project team found the great strength of the format was the emotional power of personal stories which could be told without the storyteller needing to speak in front of a large, live audience.

Andy Crofts and Max Coleman, respectively Community Gardener and Science Communicator at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, will be guest speakers at this session.

Who’s this event for?

People from Edinburgh’s universities with an interest in public engagement with research, and people from other organsiations who want to engage with the research of Edinburgh’s universities.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Beltane Sparks
May 10 @ 5:00 pm

To celebrate the Beltane Public Engagement Network turning 10, we are launching our inaugural Beltane Sparks Programme, to encourage the development of new and innovative partnerships between researchers from across the Edinburgh universities, focused on engaging the public in their research.

The Beltane partnership was originally formed in 2008, when the universities in Edinburgh were awarded over £1 million of funding to become an RCUK Beacon for Public Engagement. The mission of the Beltane Network is to support and advance a culture of public engagement with research at its partner universities. It aims to make it easier for researchers to undertake excellent, impactful public engagement with research and for partner organisations and individuals to locate and work successfully with our researchers.

Through this new cooperative model, we are exploring ways we can support interdisciplinary, multi-institution public engagement initiatives that create two-way dialogue with publics and community groups. The Beltane Sparks is one of the new ways we will be working together to facilitate high quality public engagement with research.

The Call

The call is open to researchers with an interest in public engagement, from all levels and areas of academia and public engagement experience. During the half day workshop, attendees will be supported to come up with innovative public engagement projects within cross-institution, multi-disciplinary teams. Teams will pitch their idea, Dragons-Den style, to a prestigious panel, who will award funding to the winning team to pilot their idea.

The Panel
We are delighted to be welcoming Public Engagement experts from UK Research and Innovation, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and one of our key local community partners, WHALE Arts Agency, to be part of our expert panel. Places are limited and will be allocated based on the following criteria:

  1. An understanding of the importance of engaging the public in research
  2. The ability to embrace new and inspiring thinking

We will be looking for a range of researchers at different levels and areas of academia and from across all Edinburgh-based research institutions. All applicants must be available to attend the workshop in Edinburgh from 1-5pm on Thursday 13 June 2019.

Timescales and Decision making

Your application will then go through an assessment process involving a selection panel of public engagement experts from the four Edinburgh Universities. We will inform applicants of the outcomes of the decision-making process by end May 2019.
