Could you help run Edinburgh Cafe Scientifique?

Could you help run Edinburgh Cafe Scientifique?

Ulrike Knies-Bamforth is looking for someone to help her run Edinburgh Cafe Scientifique. She needs one (or more!) people to help her advertise the group’s events through social media and other channels. Depending on your interests, you could also help with booking speakers and venues. This is a great opportunity to gain experience of running a series of public engagement events for adults!

What is Cafe Scientifique?

Cafe Scientifique is an open and informal forum for the public discussion of science and engineering! The cafe is committed to encouraging public engagement with science and engineering by hosting monthly Cafes in which expert speakers are discussing timely topics with an audience of non-specialists.

What happens at a Café Scientifique event?

The session begins with our guest speaker giving a 30-45minute talk about the subject. The key here is that it is informal. That means no need for PowerPoint or any visual aides, just the speaker addressing the issue. There is then a short break to allow glasses to be refilled, followed by discussion about the topic, initially taking form of a Q&A session directed at the speaker.

Why Have Café Scientifique?

Public engagement with science is an important issue as the lay communities’ understanding of topical science exerts strong influence over its boundaries and uses.
One only has to recall the MMR scandal in recent years to see how important the lay community is in the advancement and implementation of modern science, and how vital it is that we are all reliably informed.

Who attends?

Due to the nature of Café Scientifique our attendees come from all walks of life, all sharing a common interest in science.

Ok, so when is it on?

The café runs on the second Monday (occasionally alternative Mondays) of the month at the Filmhouse bar (Lothian road), starting at 8.30.

How much does it cost?

FREE! (although we welcome donations)

Hope to see you there!

Explorathon Volunteers Needed!
Sep 18 @ 5:00 pm

Explorathon, arguably Europe’s biggest single public engagement with research event, takes place here in Edinburgh on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th September. Could you help us evaluate the different activities, or make sure things run smoothly on the day? If so, then please come and volunteer!

Explorathon is Scotland’s contribution to European Researchers’ Night. Here in Edinburgh, researchers will engage members of the public with their work through drop-in activities, storytelling, discussions and demonstrations at venues included WHALE Arts, Ocean Terminal and the Charteris Centre.

We now have a full programme of researcher-led activities, but we still need volunteers to help things run smoothly. We need both general volunteers, and volunteers who will evaluate the events. Full (online) training for evaluation volunteers will be given.

This is a great opportunity for someone wanting to gain more experience of organising and running a large-scale public engagement with research event. Reasonable expenses will be covered and basic communication training offered.

If you have any questions about volunteering, please email Hannah Cook.

Midlothian Science Festival 2018 – Creative Team Volunteer
Apr 18 all-day

The Midlothian Science Festival is currently recruiting people to join their Creative Team. This is a volunteer role and you will gain excellent and first-hand experience in event development and management alongside supporting various other aspects of “behind the scenes” work involved in managing a science festival, including partnership working, marketing and communications, funding applications and data collection. This is a great opportunity to expand your experience, creativity and skill set, whilst supporting a Science Festival aiming to engage with those people whom don’t traditionally seek out or attend science based events. A challenging but rewarding role, for sure.

No experience is required, just an enthusiasm for sharing science with others and a hard-working and friendly attitude. We welcome applications from all schools and departments.

The dates for the 2018 festival are Sat 6 – Sat 20 October 2018.  And Monthly meetings will start in April/May

Go to http://midlothiansciencefestival.com/get-involved/creative-team/ to find out more and to download (the very short) application form.

The deadline for applications in 5pm, on Wednesday 18 April.

If you have any questions about joining the Creative Team please do get in touch  –  email: claire.jellema@ed.ac.uk or call 07930409940.

Volunteers Needed for Soapbox Science Edinburgh
Apr 30 all-day

Are you passionate about science and love talking to people about it? Do you want to help raise awareness about gender equality in science careers? Soapbox Science Edinburgh is looking for volunteers to help out at their event on 2 June 2018!

Soapbox Science is not just about the speakers. Without a supportive team of committed, enthusiastic people, a Soapbox event simply cannot happen. Volunteers play a crucial role in rounding up the public, chatting to them informally about science, supporting the speakers by managing props and helping to calm any pre-box nerves, as well as handing out Soapbox goodies to lucky audience members! But perhaps the most important role of the volunteers is gathering data so we can effectively monitor the success of the event: volunteers carry out the bulk of our streamlined evaluation process, through interviews, observations and counting footfall.

Join us for an afternoon of fun, informal and inspiring science and help challenge ideas about who can be a scientist!

To register your interest, please email: soapboxscienceedinburgh@gmail.com
